Parishioners request bishop to discuss priest's removal

The faithful at Our Lady's Parish at Wangaratta in north-east Victoria have requested a visit from Sandhurst Diocese Bishop Joe Grech to discuss the planned removal of their parish priest.

Fr Steve Bohan, who has led the South Wangaratta parish for six years, has been transferred to nearby Yarrawonga and not replaced. The South Wangaratta parish is to be "swallowed up" by main Wangaratta parish.

90 parishioners attended a meeting on Monday to air their concerns that the parish not be absorbed by the main parish.

Fr Bohan said the depth of feeling about the decision was evident during Monday's meeting, with parishioners stressing the importance of Our Lady's maintaining its own identity.

"People want to see things put in place which guarantee the parish's ongoing existence," he said.

A letter that is currently being drafted by the parish will invite Bishop Grech to visit Our Lady's and speak to parishioners about plans for the future.

Filipino priest Fr Dave Jurcales is scheduled to arrive in mid-December to assist with the workload of the Wangaratta parishes.
