Vatican condemns terrorist bombing in Turkey

A statement released by the Holy See Press Office late last night has regretted the loss of innocent life in yesterday's terrorist attack in Istanbul.

Two explosions rocked Istanbul late yesterday Australian time, one at the British consulate and the other at the British international bank HSBC, killing 27 people and wounding more than 400. Those killed included British Consul General Roger Short.

Vatican Press Office Director Joaquin Navarro-Valls formulated the statement in which he stated the Vatican's position that the "barbaric logic of terrorism only causes the death of innocent people and destruction", and "aggravates the problems that it claims to resolve".

He quoted the words of Pope John Paul II that 'Terrorism is based on contempt for the dignity of man' and therefore 'it is a crime against humanity,' especially 'when it becomes a political strategy'."
