Sydney hosting international meeting of Benedictine Nuns
Benedictine nuns from around the world are taking part in an historic meeting of the Communio Internationalis Benedictinarum (International Alliance of Benedictine Women), aimed at fostering the development of women's monasticism.
The Alliance was established in November 2001. Among those present is the Rome-based Benedictine men's and women's International Alliance Abbot Primate, Notker Wolf (pictured). Wolf's role is to foster union between the many diverse Benedictine communities, which represent 16,500 women and 8500 men.
The gathering, which began on Friday, will continue until Saturday. It is taking place at the Good Samaritan Sisters' Mount St Benedict Centre, at Pennant Hills in northern Sydney. Yesterday afternoon, Fr Michael Casey OCSO and Margaret Malone SGS presented a public forum examining issues in monastic spirituality.
The Good Samaritans, one of Australia's largest religious congregations, are part of the Benedictine family. They were founded by Archbishop Bede Polding, Australia's first bishop.
Good Samaritan Congregatinal Leader Sr Sonia Wagner said: "The purpose of the Communio is to promote mutual support and exchange of ideas and experience among Benedictine women on an international level and to foster the development of women's monasticism."
Sr Sonia said Australian Benedictines are delighted to be able to host "such a rich and wonderful gathering" of Benedictine women.
This week's program also includes a visit to the Abbey of the Benedictine Nuns at Jamberoo in the NSW Southern Highlands, and a visit to St Mary's Cathedral with Prayer at the tomb of Archbishop Polding.
