Kenyan Cardinal Otunga Dies at age 80
Retired Archbishop of Nairobi, Cardinal Maurice Michael Otunga, died on Saturday after a long illness.
Pope John Paul II sent a telegram of condolence to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, where the cardinal died.
"It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of Cardinal Maurice Michael Otunga, and I wish to assure you and all the faithful of the archdiocese of Nairobi of my prayers to the good shepherd that, in his tender love, he will bring this dedicated servant speedily to the place prepared for him at the heavenly banquet," the pope's telegram said.
Otunga was born in Chebukwa in January 1923, and was ordained at age 27. After holding numerous posts in Kenya, he was proclaimed a cardinal by Pope Paul VI in 1973. He was also the archbishop emeritus of Nairobi, having retired in 1997.
"With heartfelt condolences to all who mourn the loss of this devoted pastor, I cordially impart my apostolic blessing as a pledge of comfort and peace in the risen savior," the pope said.
