Jesuit 'collaborators' to become 'partners'
The Society of Jesus will now refer to lay persons working in its ministries as "partners", rather than "collaborators".
The 69th Conference of Procurators for the Society of Jesus which has just ended in Loyola, Spain. Fr Frank Brennan represented the Australian Province.
The meeting noted that the term "collaborator" had been "not well accepted". But the adoption of the designation "partner" also signified the meeting's determination to hand over more responsibility to lay persons working in Jesuit ministries. It said the partners' presence "should be expected at some meetings" that have traditionally been all-Jesuit occasions.
Discussion also underlined the necessity for "more decentralisation" of government in the order, entrusting "the major responsibility to the Conferences of Provincials".
However the meeting sought greater Jesuit intervention at the international level in "events of international importance" such as terrorism and immigration.
