Vatican employee killed in construction accident
A construction worker fell to his death from scaffolding on the front of St Peter's basilica yesterday morning.
Constantino Marchionni, a 52-year-old Vatican employee working on the renovations to the facade of the basilica, died of internal injuries suffered when he tumbled from a height of about three metres. Another worker, whose identity has not yet been made public, suffered minor injuries.
Dozens of Vatican employees, including both police officials and members of the Roman Curia, arrived quickly on the scene after the accident. But Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls told reporters that Marchionni was pronounced dead shortly after the arrival of a medical team.
