Commission welcomes Federal Government commitments on land clearing
Brisbane's Catholic Justice and Peace Commission has backed the continuing commitment of the Federal Government to both a fair deal for primary producers and to the introduction of sustainable practices with respect to land clearing in Queensland.
Executive Officer Peter Arndt was commenting on recent statements by Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson at the Queensland State Conference of the National Party.
Asked about efforts to finalise a land clearing package for Queensland on ABC Radio's The World Today on 1 August, Mr Anderson said:
"Of course we need to move to sustainability, and where practices are not sustainable they must be addressed and I have hardly met a farmer in the place who would disagree with that proposition."
Mr Anderson also said the Government was committed to getting a "fair deal for farmers".
"It is encouraging to see that the Federal Government is not backing away from its commitment to stop land clearing where it is contributing to the salinity problem, the global warming problem and to the loss of plant and animal species," Mr Arndt said.
"We are also satisfied that the Premier is equally committed to these environmental outcomes," he said.
"We simply cannot sustain the levels of tree clearing we have had in the last few years if we are to avoid serious problems for both farmers and the State generally down the track," he said.
