Vinnies assisting refugees to learn banking
The St Vincent de Paul Society in Queensland is providing assistance to refugees challenged by the complexities of the banking system.
Vinnies at suburban Kingston has enlisted the services of the ANZ Bank to provide a special tutorial in refugees' own language. The session included recognition of words and numbers when using ATMs, and the amount they will need for expenses such as groceries and rent.
The bank brought a model of an ATM in to Vinnies' Kingston premises.
Special Works Conference President Linda Walsh said: "This is good practical assistance to address a very basic problem that impacts on many people."
The Society is attuned to a large range of domestic difficulties faced by refugees, including power switches and hot water services.
