Pope appoints two new bishops to Sydney Archdiocese
The Holy Father last night announced that he has appointed as auxiliary bishops to the Archdiocese, seminary rector Fr Julian Porteous and Dominican bioethicist Fr Anthony Fisher OP.
Porteous (pictured left) is Rector of the Seminary of the Good Shepherd in Sydney, while Fisher (right) is the foundation director and Professor of Bioethics and Moral Theology at the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family, Melbourne.
Archbishop George Pell signalled his approval of the Pope's appointments in a message of welcome.
"The appointment of new bishops is always a happy occasion," he said. "I look forward to working with Bishop Porteous and Bishop Fisher."
An auxiliary Bishop assists an Archbishop in his governance of the Archdiocese, but is also a member with him of the College of Bishops.
The two new bishops will join existing auxiliaries David Cremin and Geoffrey Robinson.
Their consecration has been scheduled for 3 September, in St Mary's Cathedral.
They will meet the media at Polding House in the city, this morning.
