A Catholic bishop accused of covering up sexual abuse by United States priests was arrested yesterday on a hit-and-run charge. Thomas O'Brien, Bishop of Phoenix, Arizona, has acknowledged he was driving the car.

Police are alleging the Bishop had sped off after running over and killing a pedestrian. The licence plate of his car was taken down by witnesses at the accident scene on Saturday evening, Phoenix police spokesman Randy Force said. The bishop later told police that he had been returning from a Mass.

His tan Buick, which had front-end damage and a smashed windshield, was seized by police on Monday at the bishop's Phoenix home, Sergeant Force said.

The story is being widely reported in the media this morning. Our link below takes you to the coverage in The Age which comes from the Los Angeles Times and Agence France Press.
