US seeks Vatican approval of genetically modified food
US diplomats are pressing the Vatican to approve genetically modified foods, according to the Italian monthly 30 Giorni.
30 Giorni indicates that the use of genetically altered foods was one of the topics brought up by US Secretary of State Colin Powell when he met with Pope John Paul II on June 2. The American official raised the same issue again in his subsequent talks with Cardinal Angelo Sodano and Archbishop Jean-Louis Tauran.
Vatican officials indicate that they have not rejected the American initiative, but prefer to handle the issue of genetically altered foods with caution.
