Vic budget puts election promises before social commitments
Catholic Social Services (CSS) has said the politically strong Bracks Labor Government has missed an opportunity to support a social agenda that would seriously address social disadvantage in Victoria.
CSS Policy Director Fr Joe Caddy said that in returning the Bracks Government last Novermber for a second term with an overwhelming majority, Victorians demonstrated their strong support for Labor's superior social agenda.
He said the Budget offers no comfort to children in care, the mentally ill and homeless, and those struggling daily to make ends meet.
"In fact, it potentially exacerbates pressure points on vulnerable families with the proposed annual indexing of fees and fines," he said. "This could further add to the burden already experienced by low income families as they confront increased charges."
