In addition to emails, the Holy See received many congratulatory telegrams for the Holy Father, who turned 83 on Sunday, even though he prefers to celebrate the 4 November feast of his patron saint, St Charles Borromeo.

Meanwhile on Monday the Pope told thousands of visiting Poles in St Peter's Square that he feels his "day of judgment before God" is drawing nearer.

"Yesterday, I turned 83. I am ever more aware of the fact that the day when I have to account for my life before God is always closer," the Holy Father said in unprepared remarks in Polish in St Peter's Square to thousands of visiting Poles.

The pope said he would have to account for his life in Wadowice, the town where he was born, in Krakow, where he was a priest, bishop and cardinal, and in Rome, where he has been Roman Catholic leader since 1978.

He is due to make four more trips abroad this year and Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski on Monday invited him to travel again to Poland whenever he wanted.
