Indian women attack nun over school admission


Women members of a ruling party in the western Indian state of Maharashtra blackened a Catholic nun with paint and powder for ignoring political pressure to admit some children into her school.

Sr Victoria Fernandes said 14 women of the Nationalist Congress Party entered her office on Thursday around midday "and one by one they painted my face, hands, blouse and sari with black ink and powder."

They also pushed around the 48 year old Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod nun who is principal of Holy Cross Convent High School in Thane, near Mumbai.

A.L. Varma, joint commissioner of police for Thane, said that 10 of the accused women were arrested on the night of April 10 and released on bail soon after.
