Australian Catholic women set to create "culture of peace"

Three bodies in the Australian Church are combining forces in an attempt to foster a "culture of peace" through various activities taking place in the wake of the project's launch on Easter Sunday.

Catholic Women - Creating a Culture of Peace, will be launched on the website of the Commission for Australian Catholic Women (CACW). The Catholic Women's League (CWL) and the Australian Conference of Leaders of Religious Institutes are also involved in the project (ACLRI).

A statement released by the Commission on Friday says Catholic women are being invited to create a culture of peace, "in their hearts, their families, communities and nation".

Executive officer Therese Vassarotti said the idea sprang from a meeting with members of the CWL, ACLRI and Women and the Australian Church (WATAC).

She said: "When talk of war and seeds of fear are more and more beginning to impact on our lives and responses, it became apparent that the quest for peace, within ourselves, our families and our wider communities is the fertile ground for coming together across differences."

Ms Vassarotti said the Easter Sunday initiative will encourage groups and communities through dialogue, pastoral planning and theological reflection to consider creating a culture of peace within and across various groups.

She said action is likely to include fostering dialogue with local parliamentarians and community leaders.
