New bishop for Melbourne Archdiocese

Pope John Paul II has appointed Vicar-General of the Archdiocese of Melbourne, Monsignor Bishop Prowse, as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese.

Archbishop Denis Hart, who made the announcement, said that the Prowse's appointment would take effect immediately.

Bishop-elect Prowse, 49, was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese in 1980.

He said: "I know I can join you in expressing congratulations and prayerful good wishes to Monsignor Prowse for his ministry among us."

He also announced that Prowse's Episcopal Ordination is likely to take place in St. Patrick's Cathedral on Monday 19 May.

Bishop-elect Prowse will assist in the Southern Region of the Archdiocese of Melbourne.
