Catholic Commission supports unions wage claim
The Australian Catholic Commission for Employment Relations (ACCER) has backed the ACTU's annual wage bid on behalf of the nation's lowest paid workers that is due to begin in Melbourne.
Australia's 1.7 million award workers were last year granted a record $18-a-week payrise by the AIRC. This year, a hefty pay rise of $24.60 a week is being sought for low-paid workers - such as waiters, bar attendants, cleaners and hospitality staff.
The union claim is backed by ACCER and the Australian Council of Social Services, while the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is arguing for no pay rise at all.
