Italian Jesuit journal condemns intercommunion
The influential Jesuit magazine CiviltÓ Cattolica is issuing a clear condemnation of the practice of sharing the Eucharist with non-Catholics.
In a long article that will appear in tomorrow's issue of the periodical, Fr Giuseppe de Rosa argues that "Eucharistic hospitality" cannot be justified on the basis of ecumenical progress.
He sais that unauthorised intercommunion is an attempt to "force the issue", and concludes that the practice might actually set back efforts to establish authentic Christian unity.
Articles published by CiviltÓ Cattolica carry special weight in Rome, as the publication is screened in advance by the Vatican Secretariat of State. Catholic World News comments that the prominence accorded to Father de Rosa's essay suggests that the issue is a matter of keen interest to Vatican officials.
