Lobbyists welcome closure of Woomera Detention Centre
The Australian Political Ministry Network (PolMin) yesterday welcomed this week's annoucement by Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock of the closure of South Australia's Woomera Detention Centre.
But PolMin's statement called on the Federal Government to go further.
"It is a small gesture to a policy issue that needs immediate attention," said PolMin coordinator James McGillicuddy. "The entire detention regime needs restructuring. The policy lumps together asylum seekers and deportees.
"The bringing together of asylum seekers and deportees creates an unhealthy, both psychologically and physically, for asylum seekers." he said. "Deportees want to flee deportation and so create trouble so as to escape. As a result conditions are hard in the centers so as to control this trouble. Asylum seekers are caught up in the middle."
