Italian priest opens church to Saturday night clubbers

An priest in the northern Italian city of Trieste is opening his church late on Saturday nights to get closer to young people.

Fr Paolo Iannaccone, 37, came up with the idea after talking to local teenagers.

His church will be open from 11:00 pm on Saturday until 2:00 am on Sunday so people can combine prayer with a night on the town.

The first test of the scheme came at the weekend, when more than 60 teenagers attended, local daily Il Piccolo reports.

The priest said: "We'll test it out over the next few Saturdays and see how it goes."

He added he also wants to visit local bars and clubs to talk to teenagers about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
