New National President for Vinnies

West Australian John Meahan has been elected President of the National Council of the St Vincent de Paul Society to succeed outgoing President John Moore.

Mr Meahan, originally from Scotland, has been a Vinnies member for over 40 years, working personally with some of the most marginalised people in Australia.

The National Council election, held in Sydney, was also attended by the St Vincent de Paul Society International President-General, Jose Ramon Diaz-Torremocha, who is currently on a national tour observing Vinnies' work among the growing numbers of poor and disadvantaged Australians.

Mr Diaz-Torremocha praised the leadership of outgoing President, Mr John Moore, saying that the work of the St Vincent de Paul Society in Australia, under John Moore's Presidency, has been held up as an outstanding example to other countries around the world.

Outgoing National President, John Moore, has wished President-elect John Meahan his warmest wishes as he takes on the leadership of the National Council of Australia, representing some 40,000 Vinnies members.

Mr Meahan said: "I can only hope to continue with the great work that John Moore has been responsible for, in helping to shape a more just and compassionate Australian community."
