Bishops make fresh resolve to follow sex abuse response procedures

Assembled for their plenary session in Sydney last week, Australia's bishops renewed their determination to "respond decisively and compassionately"to complaints of abuse by Church personnel.

At the same time, they expressed confidence that their "procedures are proving effective and much has been accomplished".

In a statement released on Friday, the Bishops pledged to "renew [their] resolve to follow [their] agreed procedures", while "reaffirm[ing] all our previous commitments to victims and the process of healing".

The statement also determined that the Bishops:

insist that our procedures be just to all parties and that the presumption of innocence be at all times respected;

accept the need for accountability and consistency in all that we do;

propose that the National Committee for Professional Standards continue to assess and refine these procedures
