Bishop survives fatal Manila plane crash

A bishop and several foreign tourists survived yesterday's plane crash into Manila Bay in which at least 14 people including a Sydney man died.

Flight 585 of Laoag International Airlines was carrying five crew and 29 passengers, including Bishop Jose Salazar of Batanes-Babuyanes, when it crashed in the early morning.

The Dominican bishop was returning to his prelature in the northernmost tip of the country, just south of Taiwan.

The National Disaster Coordinating Council described the 65-year-old bishop's condition as "serious".

A coast guard tally released about eight hours after the crash indicated that 15 survivors were brought to two hospitals in downtown Manila and the Philippine Navy Clinic.
