Cardinal Sepe offers goodwill toward China at Cardinal Wu's funeral
As Hong Kong Catholics mourned their departed leader, a senior Vatican official expressed goodwill toward China, as well as a hope for more dialogue between the local Church and the Hong Kong government.
Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, represented Pope John Paul II and presided at the requiem Mass last week for the late Cardinal John Baptist Wu Cheng-chung of Hong Kong (pictured).
Cardinal Sepe, the highest Vatican figure officially to visit the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region since the territory reverted to China in 1997, paid his first visit to Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa soon after the Mass.
Bishop Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, who was coadjutor bishop and automatically became Hong Kong's ordinary when Cardinal Wu died on 23 September, accompanied Cardinal Sepe.
