Vatican announces major changes to its Curia
The Vatican yesterday announced a series of major changes in the leadership of the Roman Curia, including the appointment of African Cardinal Francis Arinze (pictured) to the position of prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship in place of retiring Cardinal Jorge Arturo Medina Estevez.
Cardinal Arinze, outgoing Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue, is being replaced by British Bishop Michael Louis Fitzgerald, who also takes the rank of archbishop.
In another major appointment, Archbishop Renato Martino, who has served as the Vatican representative at the UN, has been named the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, succeeding the late Cardinal Francois Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan.
Meanwhile Cardinal Agostino Cacciavillan has resigned as president of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See. He will be replaced by Bishop Attilio Nicora, who also assumes the rank of archbishop.
