Ratings reveal CathNews is Australia's most popular religious website
Church Resources has been informed that its CathNews website is ranked No. 1 in the Lifestyle-Religion category by Australia's premier internet ratings agency.
The Melbourne-based Hitwise told Church Resources of its achievement this week. It said the site's ranking is based on the number of user visits it received for the July-September quarter.
CathNews (formerly Catholic Telecommunications) sends a free email each weekday to almost 7000 subscribers. Statistics suggest that almost half the subscribers click through to the site, together with others who visit the site independently.
Church Resources is supported by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference and the Australian Conference of Leaders of Religious Institutes. Its main purpose is to organise bulk buying of resources such as cars and telecommunications products for church organisations.
CEO Fr Michael Kelly founded Eureka Street and Australian Catholics magazines more than a decade ago, and initiated CathNews at the height of the Internet boom in 1999.
"It's really a bit like the Parable of the Sower in the Gospels," said Fr Kelly. "We're pleased that the ratings suggest we correctly identified back then how the Internet could best serve the Catholic community, when so many companies with a gold rush mentality did not survive."
CathNews is produced by a small team led by webmaster/editor Michael Mullins, who developed the site after working as a producer with ABC Radio religious programs and Catholic Communications Melbourne.
