Pell tops Ernie Awards

Sydney's Archbishop George Pell has been declared this year's worst offender in making sexist public comments, with a raucous crowd of women awarding him a "Gold Ernie".

About 400 women gathered at New South Wales Parliament on Thursday night to decide the winners of the annual Ernie awards for sexist remarks, across eight separate categories.

Dr Pell not only won the clerical category but was also the night's clear overall winner, taking out the Gold Ernie for remarks made earlier this year.

What impressed the judges most was Archbishop Pell's remark at July's World Youth Day in Toronto that abortion is a worse moral scandal than clergy sex abuse.
