Vatican rejects Capuchin Provincial elect who is not a priest
Following intervention from the Congregation for the Institutes of the Consecrated Life, a priest is to take the place of Br Robert Smith as Provincial elect of the Detroit Province of the Capuchin Friars Minor.
Br Smith was elected to the office by the provincia Chapter back in June. This nomination was confirmed by the Minister General, Fr John Corriveau, but blocked by the Congregation for the Institutes of the Consecrated Life and Societies of the Apostolic Life.
Although the Constitutions of the Capuchin Friars allows brothers to hold high office, the Vatican Congregation indicated that it is untenable for a non-priest religious to have authority over friars who are priests.
The objections expressed by the Congregation were accepted in virtue of the oath of obedience. The General Council of the Order proceeded to appoint of 50 year old Michigan parish priest Fr Daniel Anholzer.
