US dioceses report men entering seminary are younger
Anecdotal reports indicate that new seminarians this year are younger on average than in recent years, the Department of Communications of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops has said.
It said that, according to reports from dioceses across the country, more than 3400 men are enrolled in college or post-college seminaries in preparation for diocesan priesthood.
It described the group as diverse in age and background and said some dioceses are reporting the largest number of men in formation that they have seen in many years.
The USCCB survey was based on reports from diocesan communications or vocations offices. The USCCB did not seek data on those in formation for ordained religious life.
