Holy Spirit Sisters to sell Brisbane hospital

The Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters have placed Holy Spirit Hospital on Wickham Terrace in Brisbane up for sale.

The Catholic Leader reports that they have asked health care providers for expressions of interest to buy the hospital, with the sale expected to be completed by Christmas.

The Congregation's Australian provincial leader, Sr Patricia Naughton, said she made the announcement to end speculation and rumours that the hospital had been sold already.

'This is a very sad day for the Holy Spirit Sisters,' she said. 'But it is a decision we've had to make.

'The hospital has been run by the sisters since 1946, so it is the end of a long association.'

Sr Naughton stressed that the hospital would not be closing.

She had met earlier with the hospital's doctors' advisory board to inform them of the decision and with visiting medical officers, staff and auxiliary personnel.

Sr Naughton said the congregation had consulted with those affected and fielded their questions about the sale.

It would also meet with the relevant unions.
