Vatican gives blessing to Pope telemovie

A television drama depicting the early life of Pope John Paul II has been given the blessing by the Vatican, according to reports.

The movie will focus on Karol Wojtyla's childhood in Poland through to his election as the first non-Italian pope in more than four centuries in 1978.

The movie will be based on the biography of veteran Vatican journalist Gianfranco Svidercoshi, entitled Story of Karol, Variety reports.

Producer Pietro Valsecchi is hoping to land Italian actor Luca Zingaretti to play the young Pope. Filming is expected to start in September 2003, to be screened on Italian network Canale 5.

Mr Svidercoshi's book contains segments about the Pope's experiences during the war years and his opposition to communism.

The movie is also likely to deal with the lighter side of his youth, before his religious calling, when he was a promising goalkeeper and his love for the theatre.
