Indigenous appointment to the Commission for Australian Catholic Women

The Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference has appointed Mrs Joan Hendriks to the Commission for Australian Catholic Women.

Mrs Hendriks fills the vacancy left by Mrs Colleen Muckan of Mt Isa whose valuable contribution to the Commission was curtailed by her extensive workload in the Diocese of Townsville.

Joan Hendriks, from Brisbane, has had a long involvement at all levels of Church life representing indigenous people. She is currently coordinator of Churches Together Aboriginal Partnership, Queensland, Lecturer in Cultural Studies and Indigenous Spirituality, Australian Catholic University and a member of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council.

The Australian Bishops' Social Justice Statement 2000 placed considerable emphasis on the participation of indigenous women in the life of the Church. Mrs Hendriks brings much experience and wisdom to facilitating this participation. While her appointment is effective immediately it is appropriate that Mrs Hendriks first Commission meeting will take place in her home town of Brisbane on 9th August, 2002.
