Vatican announces Day of Prayer for Sanctification of Priests
In the wake of sex abuse scandals in the US and elswhere, the Vatican has proclaimed tomorrow - the Feast of the Sacred Heart - as a World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests.
Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos, prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Clergy, wrote to the world's more than 400,000 priests last month, proposing frequent reception of the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist as the key to "rediscovery of their priestly identity".
"If, absurdly, we do not do this, we will find ourselves increasingly submerged in the night, in a confused ethical darkness, in spiritual impotence in face of a wave of evil that would run the risk of drowning us," the cardinal explained.
Castrillón proposed to the world's priests that they transform their lives by experiencing Divine Mercy through the intervession of St Faustina Kowalska. He said that by allowing themselves to be imbued by Divine Mercy, priests would show themselves as "a sign of God's forgiveness for all".
