Vinnies sends SOS as winter cold strikes
Calls for assistance to the St Vincent de Paul Society are increasing, compared to this time last year, with volunteers and staff working overtime to meet the demand of people in desperate need.
Vinnies' NSW State President Pat O'Flynn yesterday issued a plea for help.
He said: "We all know living costs increase at this time and basics like heating and warm clothing are simply beyond some peoples' reach."
Patrol van operators in NSW report that they are extra busy, dispensing food to record numbers of people on the streets. In some areas, the demand for assistance from Vinnies' Home Visitation program has meant their volunteers are having to use extraordinary means to meet the need.
In calling for help, yesterday's statement suggested members of the public get in quickly to make their tax deductible donation, as the current financial year ends on Sunday. The number to call is 131812.
