Bishops urge prayers for Timorese as new nation celebrates independence
The Australian Catholic Bishops have invited Australians to pause in prayer and thanksgiving on Monday for East Timor's independence day.
Archbishop Carroll, President of the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference, said: "Australians have long had a special affiliation with the people of East Timor and we recognise the work of countless communities across Australia in giving practical support to the people of East Timor in their time of need."
Bishop Hilton Deakin, chairperson of Caritas Australia, will represent Archbishop Carroll and the bishops of Australia in East Timor for their independence celebrations.
