Vatican commends Australian bishops on asylum seeker stand
The Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference recent statement on Refugees and Asylum Seekers has been praised by the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerants.
"The Bishops' strong statements in this touching appeal ... and the competent description of the international scene show a constant attention to the dramatic necessities of these marginalised people as well as a deep and lived awareness of the prophetic mission of the Church," said Archbishop Stephen Fumio Hamao, President of the Council in a letter to the Australian Bishops.
Archbishop Hamao assured the Australian bishops of his office's prayers for an effective response to the statement that "may contribute to forming the conscience of the members of the Government and of the entire Australian people".
When he launched the Statement at the end of March, Australian Bishops Conference President Archbishop Francis P Carroll stressed that its challenge is "not only for the Government but for the whole Australian Community".
He said: "As part of that Community, the Catholic Church pledges its continuing support for these suffering people."
