Catholic Health exposes 'neglected' issues of Federal Budget

A week after the handing down of the Federal Budget, Catholic Health Australia has issued an analysis that concludes that Treasurer Costello "baulked at addressing the hard systemic issues and paid little regard to the health care needs of many vulnerable and often powerless groups".

CEO Francis Sullivan nominated a range of vital areas overlooked, including cost pressures on public hospitals, the blow out in the private health insurance rebate, the lack of adequate mental health services and the disregard for suitable accommodation for people with head injuries.

"Spending cuts form the centrepiece of this Budget with no serious attention to revenue reform, progressive taxation changes and broader financing options beyond the health portfolio," he said. "The Government has missed an opportunity to advance inclusive, equitable reform."

Catholic Health Australia has produced a detailed Budget Analysis, which is available on its website.
