Priest killed in rebel-held eastern Congo
Gunmen have shot dead a Catholic priest while he was driving along a stretch of road in rebel-held northeastern Congo, aid officials said on Wednesday.
Fr Romano Kaindo, 50, was killed on Tuesday evening in Butembo, some 170 kilometres to the north of Goma, in an area controlled by Ugandan-backed rebels after leaving the residence of the bishop of Beni-Butembo, aid officials said.
Nothing was stolen and it appeared the killing was linked to continuing insecurity in the area, the officials said.
Kaindo was killed by rebels from the Rwandan-backed Congolese Rally for Democracy-Goma, the Vatican missionary news agency, FIDES, reported Wednesday, citing unidentified sources. However, the rebel group has not operated in that area in more than three years.
Officials of the rebel Congolese Rally for Democracy-Liberation Movement, which controls the area, could not be reached for comment.
