Tasmanian Archbishop

Archbishop Adrian Doyle of Hobart has called for interdenominational protocols to help in the fight against sex abuse across Church ranks

The Catholic Leader reports that the archbishop made the plea after he revealed last weekend that he had rejected a bid by a former Brisbane Anglican priest accused of sexual misconduct who had sought to become a Catholic priest in Tasmania

The former Anglican priest, who had been precentor at St John's Anglican Cathedral, Brisbane, joined the Catholic Church in Tasmania in July 1999

Governor-General Dr Peter Hollingworth has come under fire because, while Anglican Archbishop of Brisbane, he had appointed the priest, Ross McAuley, to the Anglican Church's sexual misconduct committee in Brisbane despite claims that he knew of unsubstantiated allegations that Mr McAuley had sexually abused a teenage boy

Mr McAuley spent 2000 living in Devonport in northern Tasmania with a view to the Roman Catholic priesthood, but his candidacy did not continue
