Jubilee Australia staging peaceful CHOGM progest
A coalition of Church and community groups was planning to congregate outside the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), opening on the Sunshine Coast at the weekend weekend, to renew a call for the cancellation of Third World debt.
The Catholic Leader reports that Jubilee Australia planned to present the Australian Government a petition with 10,000 signatures calling for the debt cancellation.
A coordinator, Elske Harrison, said a peaceful protest was also planned to support the cancellation call.
'Third World countries in the Commonwealth spend more on servicing their debts than they do on health,' she said.
Jubilee Australia has made a special call for Australia to cancel the debt by Bangladesh.
An ecumenical memorial service was to be held for the people Ms Harrison said die because servicing national debt takes money away from health services.
It was to be led by Australian Columban Father Brian Gore, who was jailed by Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines for his support for the poor.
