French church leaders criticise treatment of refugees, asylum seekers
French church leaders have criticised their country's "lamentable" treatment of refugees and asylum-seekers.
"In our society, the poor par excellence are the asylum-seekers, those whose lives are destroyed by misery, violence and uncertainty," said three bishops' conference commissions in a joint declaration.
The bishops said the complicated nature of French immigration procedures violated asylum-seekers' rights guaranteed in the Geneva Convention.
Last week's statement said hopes of better protection for asylum-seekers under a 1998 law had been "quickly disappointed" and described current asylum conditions as "lamentable".
