Nuns launch billboard campaign urging welcome for immigrants
Funded by an organisation of women religious, billboards in 10 cities in the US state of Iowa are encouraging locals to "Welcome the immigrant you once were!"
The boards are being posted by Sisters United News, an organisation representing 13 congregations of Catholic sisters based in Iowa, southwestern Wisconsin and western Illinois. For nearly two years, the members of SUN, all communications directors for their congregations, have been working on a plan to encourage all Iowans to be more accepting of immigrants.
"National media has demonstrated that the terrorist attacks in the US have impacted not only government policy but public perception of and reaction to new immigrants," said Dominican Sister Jacqueline Provencher of Iowa City, vice president of the Dominican Sisters of the Roman Congregation.
