Pell says Hollingworth should stay
Sydney's Archbishop George Pell has defended Governor-General Dr Peter Hollingworth, saying he should not be expected to stand down.
However, Dr Pell says if it is proven that a priest accused of sexual abuse was appointed to a sexual abuse committee in the Anglican Church, then that was an inappropriate handling of the matter.
Dr Hollingworth has been accused of appointing the priest to the committee, despite having already heard allegations that the priest had sexually abused a minor.
Dr Pell says while he pays no disrespect to the victims involved, it does seem there are some political motivations involved in demands for the Governor-General to resign.
"He has done a good job as Governor-General. I feel for him as the wolves circle but it's a very important office and it's important that he can fulfil it," he said.
