Former Vatican TV boss leaves priesthood to wed lover

A priest who ran the Vatican's television department until seven months ago announced on Wednesday that he's leaving the priesthood to marry his pregnant lover.

Monsignor Ugo Moretto, 45, has been living with the woman, identified only as B B, a 35-year-old journalist who has been separated from her husband for a year, in a Milan suburb since December.

"My friend is three months' pregnant," the former Director-General told Corriere della Sera, Italy's largest daily.

"We are not married but are living together and as soon as we can we will marry," added the former head of the Vatican's CTV, which distributes broadcast images of the Pope.

The romance began when they worked together on the Vatican service, and accompanied the Pope on trips abroad.

The Vatican has not commented on the matter.
