Vatican appeals for UN action in Sudan death sentence case
A Vatican cardinal has called for UN action on behalf of a young Sudanese Christian woman condemned to death by stoning for alleged adultery.
Italian Cardinal Roberto Tucci said the case was a blatant example of applying Islamic law to a non-Muslim and the latest in a long series of actions by the Sudanese government against the Christian minority.
"Why doesn't the United Nations intervene? The UN Human Rights Commission is looking into the case, but maybe this should be backed up by a real international campaign that can shed light on the situation in Sudan," Cardinal Tucci told Vatican Radio last Thursday.
