Caritas International head to air refugee concerns
The head of the international confederation of Catholic overseas aid and development organisations will argue that Australia must respond to the needs of refugees and asylum seekers with compassion, at a Parliamentary luncheon in Sydney tomorrow.
Mr Duncan MacLaren, visiting from Rome, will speak at the event hosted by NSW Premier Bob Carr in support of Caritas Australia's Lenten fundraising appeal, Project Compassion.
Mr MacLaren will argue that nations such as Australia must respond to the needs of refugees and asylum seekers with compassion. Mr McLaren supports recent criticisms of Australia's detention policy by the Catholic Church. He is particularly concerned about the detention of children.
Caritas Australia has been a leader in responding to refugee issues in the region. Caritas Australia led Caritas International's response to the refugee crisis in East Timor, and has also provided assistance to displaced populations in the Solomon Islands and Bougainville.
