New bishop for Wagga Diocese

The Apostolic Nuncio in Canberra has announced the appointment of Monsignor Gerard Hanna of Armidale as fifth bishop of the New South Wales regional Diocese of Wagga Wagga.

His predecessor, Bishop Wiliam Brennan, failed to recover following a collapse while celebrating Mass at the Australian Catholic Bishops' meeting in Sydney last May.

His Holiness Pope John Paul II has accepted Bishop Brennan's resignation while appointing Monsignor Hanna.

Hanna has been Vicar General of the Diocese of Armidale since 2001.

The news, released by the Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Francesco Canalini, was made public in Rome late last night Australian time.

No further biographical information on Monsignor Hanna is available.
