Anglicans feel pressure from abuse scandals
The controversy surrounding the Anglican Church in Brisbane and the Governor General, Dr Peter Hollingworth (former Anglican Archbishop of Brisbane) shows no signs of abating. The Australian newspaper reported yesterday that further actions are in the pipeline and the financial implications for the Anglican Church are very serious.
COME Christmas each year, the Anglican parishes of Brisbane receive a letter from head office asking them to dig deeper for their annual contribution to the running of the diocese.
This year's letter was received with anger and concern by parishioners because it warns of a $500,000 deficit after the church's mishandling of a sexual abuse case -- including by its then archbishop and current Governor-General Peter Hollingworth -- left it with legal bills of $400,000.
