Filipino bishops warn Lord of the Rings is not for kids

Catholic bishops in the Philippines have criticised Hollywood's Lord of the Rings, saying the film's graphic battle scenes could give children nightmares.

The Philippine Star reports the movie, based on JRR Tolkien's popular fantasy novel, could be praised for its "above average technical assessment".

However, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) says it may not be suitable for children under 14.

"Just because there is no impure act in 'Rings', it doesn't mean it's clean enough for children," the CBCP said. "The battle scenes could tire adults and produce nightmares in children which no amount of parental guidance may prevent."

However, the bishops applauded the film's director Peter Jackson and cinematographer Andrew Leslie, in recreating the epic story of the Middle Earth hobbits in their battle against evil.
