Vatican plans auction for Afghan war victims
In an extraordinary effort to raise funds for war victims in Afghanistan, the Vatican is planning to auction off items including works of art, books, and even episcopal rings.
Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, the prefect of the Congregation for Evangelisation, announced that the auction will be held next Thursday, at the offices of that Congregation. The proceeds will be used for all war victims, but particularly for children, he said. He added that Pope John Paul II had encouraged the auction sale.
The items to be auctioned have been donated by various bishops, who have indicated that they wish to remain anonymous.
